This recipe is pretty ambitious - everything is from scratch and it calls for a ton of ingredients. But hey, how often does your grandmother turn 90?! Just in case I totally screw it up, I'm also going to pick up a caramel iced apple pie at Homemade Ice Cream & Pie Kitchen:

If you don't live in Louisville, you are truly missing out. This awesome bakery puts all other bakeries to shame, at least the ones I've tried. This pie is their most popular pie - the picture does not even do it justice!
I'm also planning on making a spinach and artichoke casserole. I got the recipes for the casserole and the cake from one of my numerous Southern Living cookbooks. I am cautiously optimistic that these recipes will turn out great, because I firmly believe in what my Mom always says, which is that she has never made anything which came out of a Southern Living recipe that didn't taste great.

I agree whole-heartedly with your mom! While I have had some that weren't as good as others, all of the Southern Living recipes I've tried have been good (and I've tried A LOT!). I have that Chocolate Cake recipe in my binder at home but I don't think I've ever made it. I'm not a huge chocolate fan (kinda like Ryan not liking salads).
Although I don't live in Louisville, my visits there are never complete without a stop in at the Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen! You're right, so yummy. I would also recommend the caramel cake at The Cheddar Box. I got a piece when we were up there this past weekend and devoured it in one sitting! Way too much but way too good. I NEED that recipe.
Wow, I still can't get over the fact you don't like chocolate....that's unnatural! I've never tried the caramel cake at Cheddar Box, though I'm sure it's great because everything else from there is fantastic. Actually, the Courier-Journal publishes recipes from local restaurants in the Features section of every Wednesday newspaper. Readers write in to the food guy at C-J and he forwards on the requests to the restaurants, which usually oblige and send the recipe for publication. Yesterday they had some great recipes for appetizers served at Porcini on Frankfort Avenue. You should write in and request the cake recipe!
It's true about Southern Living recipes. It was I learned to cook with and they are always a crowd pleaser.
Holy Yum! Well, how did it turn out, the carmel pie looks equally as fabulous. Danielle was born on another planet... I don't know how she doesn't do chocolate. Hum... wonder what the scone is this month, we will miss you on Thursday!
If you want a more Southern selection of pies than the homemade pie pantry then try the Pie Pantry on Dixie in PRP. They have things like Pecan, peach and blackberry, a version of derby, ect! Plus they have Erhler's ice cream!
