...well, I don't know that Alexandra would agree with the title of this post, as you can tell from the above picture. I tried some squash out on her this past Sunday. This was her first real "food" following rice cereal and oatmeal. I'm not sure how well it was received - most of it ended up being spit out over the course of the afternoon (we had five, count that FIVE, outfit changes). Alexandra also slept TERRIBLY that evening...at first I was blaming it on teething, but maybe her tummy hurt from the adjustment to food after months of eating nothing but milk? Any of you with little ones think that might be a possibility? Just in case, I went back to feeding her rice cereal and oatmeal with the resolution of trying something else in a week or so - the ladies at daycare swear by sweet potatoes so maybe we'll try that or apples, maybe pears.
Even though it wasn't a hit, we still got some pictures to commemorate the occasion...as you can see, Pearl couldn't let an opportunity pass by to make her presence known.

Love your blog and have lurked for a while. With both of my girls I started with green beans for several days. I've heard that any of the potatoes give gas to the little ones and it did seem that way for both of my lovely ladies. Hope that helps.
Thanks for the advice! Someone told me this morning that I should try fruit first since it is obviously sweeter and makes for an easier transition from breast milk ... of course, I have also heard fruit first might lead them to refuse vegetables later. New parenthood is full of conflicting advice!!
By the way, I like your blog! Sorry if I sounded snarky in my prior comment - I really DO appreciate your advice on green beans and potatoes...sometimes it is just hard to figure out which advice to act upon!
i totally agree about how hard it is to know which way to go when there are always opposing opinions about everything!! i too have read that fruits sometimes cause issues because they have acid so i stuck with peas, green beans and sweet potatoes to start with. i also would take real veggies & chicken, add some chicken broth and then blend it up really small. that seemed to go well and really filled her up. sometimes just waiting one week makes all the difference. hang in there...trust your instincts and how alexandra responds - you're doing great!!
Love your blog!I started my little one with applesauce mixed in with her oatmeal, then we went to sweet potatoes alternating bites between what she knew already and the new food. I had also heard the thing @ not starting with fruits first, but applesauce was what my pediatrician recommended when she wouldn't eat the plain oatmeal or rice. good luck!
Thanks Tina! You know, I've been getting conflicting advice since the day I learned I was pregnant, even from the doctors, so I'm getting used to it! I think I will stick with veggies and either try green beans like "The Wife" suggested or peas - maybe mixed in with a little rice cereal. I'm probably being overly ambitious, but I am also making Alexandra's food myself. It really is not that bad, you just make a couple of batches and then freeze the food in ice cube trays. It's nice to hear you had some success with that yourself!
Go you on making your own food! Even I wasn't ambitious enough to attempt that one. The conflicting advice part is terrible. A friend of mine and I could never figure out why there couldn't just be one book with all the answers?! You would think you would at least get the same answers from doctors, but no that would be too easy.
By the way, we started with peas and he liked them. Of course we're talking about Mikey here, so take that into consideration! The person who suggested one bite oatmeal, one bite veggies, has a good idea. Just try different combinations until you find something that works. And realize what works today might not be what works tomorrow!
And for what it's worth, I don't think the squash would have upset her stomach, but I could be wrong! I would think that was just a coincidence. Did you eat anything different the day before that might have affected her?
