Derby Wear

I'm not quite sure how it happened, but somehow readership of my blog has crept up over 100! When I started this blog a couple of years ago, I had no idea that 10 people - much less 100 - would ever be interested in reading my random thoughts. Thank you to all of you who make it a point to read Southern Comfort and share your very positive feedback through comments. I really appreciate it!

With the first day of spring this past weekend, you can't help but get excited at the thought that warmer temperatures and more time spent outdoors is right around the corner. For those of us who are Kentucky residents, we also have the Kentucky Derby to look forward to - if I've said it once, I have probably said it a million times on here but you must go to the Kentucky Derby at least once in your life! The scenery, the fashion, the horses, and the hospitality of our great state make it a necessary item on everyone's bucket lists.

While on the computer tonight, I started looking at some Derby hats and stumbled upon this beauty:

Isn't that a fabulous hat?? It was designed by the fabulous folks at Dee's in Louisville who always do amazing things with hats - check out more of their work here. I typically do not like orange - at least on me, I do not have the coloring to pull it off. Orange seems to be a pretty hot color, though, and this hat is so lovely that I thought it would be fun to see what kind of looks I could design around it.

Here are a couple of dress options:

The dress on the left is a Milly and is definitely more my style, but I cannot seem to pull my eyes away from the Kate Spade on the right. You definitely have to have a lot of confidence to pull off that bright color! The Milly dress can be found here and the Kate Spade dress here.

Here are some great accessories that continue with our orange theme:

(From left to right, wristlet from Etsy seller Judianne, orange cocktail ring from Max & Chloe via ShopStyle.com, and clutch from Etsy seller Briana Edelman Designs)

There is a LOT of color going on here, so I thought I would round out the outfits with a great pair of nude heels from Cole Haan.

These have the Nike Air cushioning technology - because you are going to be on your feet alot that day and you won't look quite as fashionable in your great hat if you're limping from foot pain.

Enjoy!

Sara, The dress that I have for derby is orange! I might look like a HUGE tomatoe since I will be 8 month preggers but I love the dress so I am going with it. Here is my question, since I will be the size of a HOUSE, a rather large ORANGE house, do I go with a big hat to match the size of my belly or tone it down this year? I am thinking large and in charge! I will also need your help accessorizing. I have a neural gold sandal and I didn't want to spend a ton of money since it is a maternity outift but if you can throw out some inexpensive jewelry ideas I would love it. That is so awesome that you posted that, I was going to email you since you have great secret websites that you find fun stuff on!

With a little bronzer and blonde highlights, I think everyone can pull off orange!! Just keep in mind...it's not the new pink! :)

Cute choices!

Hi Sara! New follower via Kristy @ le petite blog! I absolutely love your picks! Interestingly enough, I tried on an almost identical hat yesterday and had it paired with an orange Tory Burch shift for upcoming horse racing events (we have a few up here in PA/MD/DE). Great minds think alike!! XOXO

Love all the orange color! My husband works for CSX and I hope that one day I get to go to the derby. His boss goes so maybe I will get to go. I love hats too.

Love the Milly dress, very cute, and the Cole Haan heels are so pretty, may have to get my hands on some of those, very Christian Louboutin-ish. Oh, and thanks so much for your advice on the camera. I got myself the exact one as yours, haha! I just love your pics, and hope mine turn out just as good. :) Hope I'm as good a photographer as you are too. I may be writing back soon with some questions. Hope you don't mind. My daughters were both baptized this past Sunday, so I was able to take portraits of them with the new camera. Love, love, love! I'll post pics soon. Thanks again!

I would love to go to the Derby! Maybe one day...I think this year I might host a little Derby party at the house. Any excuse to wear a ridiculously large hat!

I think both of those orange dresses are beautiful! And how great are the Cole Haan with Nike Air? So comfy.

I positively love the hat! I think it is gorgeous. I think you should buy it and go to the Derby. I only went to the Derby one time and it was the infield, so I did not wear a hat. We do like going to Keenland to picnic and bet if the weather is nice. Thanks for following my blog. I don't think I will ever have 100 people care what I have to say. Congrats to you!

Love your blog!
I think it is great you have over 100 readers--I think it would be great to get there, too!
Anyway, love the hat--very cute. You certaintly could pull it off--oh, orange goes well with other colors too like aqua? and of course you could go a neutral solide white/cream. The shoes are perfect!!
I have been to the Derby many times, and used to do the infield and tried to look cute but most of the time just got plain 'ol muddy!!
Have fun!

My husband's family is BIG into horse races. Even though we are in California, we follow horse races. In fact, we go to Golden Gate fields to the horse races every Thanksgiving. His whole family is planning a trip to the Derby either next year or the year after. I need to email you about the do's & dont's of the Derby! So jealous you get to go!
