Fast forward to law school, where I was expected to read 50 plus pages of the most boring case law before each class session - needless to say, my love of reading went down the tubes. I didn't want to spend what little free time I did have reading more books, even if it was for pleasure!
I still don't have much time these days, but in the last several months, I've really tried to pick up my reading habit once more - especially now that summer is here. Most of the books I have read are on the best seller list or I have learned about by word of mouth - I am always welcome to suggestions, should you have any! Here are the last three books I have read - I'll keep the reviews very short as the hour is getting late and my eyelids are getting heavy:

(1) Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. One-Sentence Plot - A veterinary student abandons his studies after his parents are killed and joins a traveling circus as their vet. FANTASTIC book, a great read if you are looking for something different this summer. The storyline was wonderful, not quite like anything I've ever read before. Gruen definitely did her research in preparing for this novel. Rumor has it that it is being made into a movie with Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Hal Holbrook, and Christoph Waltz (who was incredible in Inglorious Basterds).
(2) The Help by Kathryn Stockett. One-Sentence Plot - Young white woman in Mississippi joins with two black nannies to pen a book that tells the story of what it was like to work for white women in the racially divided South in the early 60's. In a word, INCREDIBLE - this book is worthy of all of the glowing reviews it received. Do yourself a favor and pick it up now.
(3) The Carrie Diaries by Candace Bushnell. One-Sentence Plot - Meet Carrie Bradshaw, the teenage years. As an avid SATC fan, I definitely wanted to pick up Bushnell's latest account of the adventures of Carrie Bradshaw. This book was okay, but not quite what I had in mind - seemed to be targeted toward younger readers. It was alright and a quick read, but just not what I had envisioned.
And here's my lineup for books to be read next:

(1) My Fair Lazy by Jen Lancaster. Oh my word, LOVE Jen Lancaster - all hail the queen of snark! I read Pretty in Plaid last fall while in Hilton Head Island for a wedding, and am planning to pick up this latest memoir for a return trip to HHI in a few weeks for another wedding!
(2) The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. I picked this one up in the Atlanta airport on a return flight to Louisville several months ago. I managed to read the first couple of chapters and found the story to be interesting, but I haven't picked it up since and I have no idea why. I've heard great things so I'm thinking it might be best to try this one again.
(3) Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. So I guess I've been under a rock because I know this one has been around for awhile, just never got around to reading it. What did you think of this one? From speaking with others who have read it, you either love it or you don't, with what appears to be an equal number of folks in each camp. I definitely would like to read this one before the movie with Julia Roberts comes out in the fall.
What say you? Have you read any of these books? Do you have any other suggestions for summer must-reads?

Can you believe I have 4 of the 6 books you've got here, but haven't read any of them yet! I just got The Help last week, and planned on reading it while at the beach, but had no time. Good luck on your next reads, and thanks for the summaries of the books you've already read. As for The Babysitter's Club...I was a huge fan, but more of Karen, the Babysitter's Little Sister books to be exact. :)
P.S. How great was Sweet Valley High on Saturday mornings? Whatever happened to those twins?
The time traveler's wife and eat pray love are both are my supper "to read" list. And i can totally relate to your lack of reading motivation in law school--I swear sometimes it is designed to eat away at all of life's pleasures and motivations.
I agree with you on The Carrie Diaries! I wrote a review on my blog about it too. I definitely want to read Eat Pray Love, The Help, and some of Jen Lancaster's books!
Oh, such good picks! I must get my hands on The Carrie Diaries!! I need that to take on vacation next week, for sure! Sweet Valley High was THE best show. One of my friends and I would always play SVH whenever we would get together, oh memories :)
This is probably a completely ridiculous question, but have you read Emily Giffin? Her books are amazing! She creates the best characters! Also, the Bridal Quartet books by Nora Roberts are fun too! Very easy, fun, girlie reads. I love to talk about books! Thank you for this post, lady :) xoxo
we have some of the same "to read list". i want to read eat, pray, love as well. the movie looks very good! my friend and i are getting ready to start a beth moore book together and i just ordered a book on amazon called the mission of motherhood. usually when ella goes to bed and i sit down for some down time it's usually behind this darn computer.....maybe i'd read more books if it wasn't for reading so many blogs
sara: i just LOVE your blog. and this post has me over the moon! as an avid reader, i was eating up every word!
i loved water for elephants & am nearly done with "the help". wow--what a fantastic book! it's quickly made it's way to the favorites list.
i've also read "the time traveller's wife"---which i can say is a beautifully written novel. "eat pray love" is my next read---like you, i want to get it in before the movie.
i also recently finished "plain truth" by jodi picoult---which i highly recommend!!
am so glad to be following you in this lovely space!
1. Loved Water for elephants.
2. Have a few new ones to read and will let you know if they are good ones.
3. I love reading and appreciate your suggestions. The Help might be next on my list.
4. Thanks for always commenting ... makes me feel like someone is enjoying what i write!
THE HELP was one of my favorites! I missed the characters after I finished the book! I just finished EAT PRAY LOVE as well. My friend LOVED it so, but I thought it was slow. The main character does inspire me to definitely take hold of life and live to the fullest! I do want to see the movie! Thanks for your other selections! I'm always keeping my eyes open for great reading! Oh....and now my daughter is into chapter books....we visit our local library often and I cannot get enough of it...the atmosphere, the smell of books...love it!
I loved babysitter's club and sweet valley high! These days I still use my library card. I pick up quick read romance novels for when I want a fast escape. It's my guilty pleasure!
I was a reading machine when I was young too!!!! I was always the first one finished with the school books and off reading my own. I LOVED Sweet Valley High, Nancy Drew, The Boxcar Children, The Babysitters Club! Ahhh such memories. I've been wanting to read The Help! Thanks for the review! :)
I am so excited to read The Help! I have lots of books on my to-read list that I can't wait to read. I've ordered Bitter Is The New Black but I think I need to pick up some more of Jen Lancaster's books! Also: I started Eat Pray Love and just couldn't get into it even though I've tried several times. I do want to see the movie though!
I just finished 'The Help' and LOVED it! I was actually waking up early to read it...imagine that!
Oh, the bookmobile. And here I was just thinking it was a far-western-Pennsylvania thing. Thanks for the reading suggestions...goodness knows how I'm going to get through my summer reading list.
As a kid, I was obsessed with the library in the summertime! I would load up on tons of books and read my little heart out.... things haven't changed much! I'm so glad you enjoyed The Help! I've been meaning to read Water for Elephants myself, and am definitely going to add it to my list! I can't wait to hear what you think of The Time Traveler's Wife... it's now one of my all-time faves! Happy reading!
First of all, I LOVE Jen Lancaster too. I have a 6 degrees of separation thing going on with her so it's my goal to meet her when I move to Chicago in August! All of her books are sooo entertaining!
Also, I just got into the first half of 'The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo' and let me tell you, I am DYING to end the work day, go home, and finish it! It started slow but midway it started racing and got REALLY interesting.
I just finished the time traveler's wife, I loved it! I have the movie version in my netflix cue. I always like to read the book first before watching the movie :)
Sweet Valley High books were my favorite,I had no idea they had made a tv show out of them!
I was living under the same rock, because I just read Eat, Pray, Love. It took me a little bit to get into the book, but once I did, I LOVE it and can't wait to pick up her new one.
I hope you enjoy it as well.
Fun blog!
What fun! I LOVE reading. (I am a lawyer too and I get tired of reading case law and stuff like that...) I have read most of the ones you have posted and enjoyed them. I will have to look for the Carrie Diaries, which sounds cute. I am currently reading The Memory Keeper's Daughter. If you have not already read it, you might enjoy The Secret Life of Bees. It was one of my favorite books last year.
Well I prefer books with pictures so that I can avoid the actual reading part. I figure Wes more than compensates for my lack of reading. I actually wish I liked it more so I wouldn't get so frustrated with him CONSTANTLY reading!
I LOVED THE HELP. It was such an amazing book! And you will love Eat, Pray, Love!
i want to read the jen lancaster book also! i just saw that eat, pray, love is coming out as a movie this summer? very excited about that!!! i always buy a lot of books but never seem to make it thru them.....maybe i need to set some more goals!!!
I enjoyed The Carrie Diaries (you saw that already I'm sure). I thought it was a nice change of pace from the graphic in-your-face sex of all the other books CB writes. My bookish friends just finished Sarah's Key and said it was really good..but not to read it if you are pregnant...so I'm in no danger there.
PS Have you read The Memory Keeper's Daughter? SO GOOD!
Thanks for sharing your recommendations! They all sound really interesting. I feel like I so seldom talk to prolific readers these days, so I'm always eager for suggestions from people who are!
I have heard great things about the last 3!! I am a horrible reader, but I should really do more! I tend to lean more to biographies and real life stories when I pick what to read. I may have to read some of these!!
The Help is one of the best books I think I have ever read! I think I might go for the Candace Bushnell one this summer...for some reason I find Jen Lancaster's books impossible to get thru...thanks for all these great tips!
Have yet to read the books posted above. This is my summer reading list: An Education by Nick Hornby, Midaq Alley by Naguib Mahfouz, Black Boy by Richard Wright and The Past Is Myself by Christabel Bielenberg.
I loved "The Help" and could not put it down! "Water for Elephants" has been added to my must-read list after reading your review. I think you will really enjoy "Eat Pray Love," I know I did!
hey! i didnt see your email listed on your page..but i got the green necklace at old navy!
Just discovered your blog and I'm so happy I did!! I too LOVE reading. Water for Elephants was a great book. My friend actually just recommended The Help, and now you're recommending it...I think that means I must buy it asap! ;) By the way, you will ADORE the Time Travelers Wife, it's really great.
Oh I'm just like you. I devour books. At least I use to.
Now with work/blog/etc I don't have as much time for it, but I'm always on the hunt for new books.
Right now I'm reading Worlds without ends by Ken Follet and I'm really liking it.
Love Jen Lancaster!!!! Totally need to get my hands on that book. I didn't realize a new one was out!
I'll have to check these out! I loved The Time Traveler's Wife - a beautiful book and so different from anything else I've ever read. I just finished The House on Legare Street, which is set in Charleston, I'm now reading The House no Tradd Street, both by Karen White. Good summer reads.
Oh my gosh, I was the same as a kid...I read SO many books during the summer time...all the Babysitter's Club, Sweet Valley Twins, Sweet Valley High, etc. That brought back memories!
Here are books on my summer reading list:
The Shack
Eat Pray Love
And, a bunch of Jodi Picoult books (she is a fantastic writer!)
And, I need to finish the last Twilight book (yep, I read them! ha!)
i would love to read the time travelers wife but the movie was SO sad. :(
i love your blog! sooo cute. your daughter is adorable. :)

I LOVED The Help!!! SUCH a great book! {As are the others!}
Wow, great suggestions! I wish I had some for you.... I have approximately 5 minutes to dedicate per night to pleasure reading. I think its because I spend way too much time online doing facebook and blogging, ha!
I give you so much credit for working full time AND being such a great mommy!
I've heard amazing things about The Help. I REALLY need to find more time for pleasure reading!
loved time travelers wife -- but don't see the movie. you'll be upset.
i need to read more. thanks for the inspiration!

You really must finish The Time Traveler's Wife. I found myself crying during the last few pages - and normally I'm not that emotionally invested in a love story!
Came across your blog and wanted to say hi! :) LOVE these books! Hope you are having a great weekend :)
I love reading as well! there is nothing like a great book. I couldn't put {The Help} down--super fab; and water for Elephants was a great read as well. It may seem pretty randon, but I really liked the book Open--it is Andre Agassi's autobiography--it was actually very good~
I will say I LIKED eat pray love! Is there a camp for "likers"? I was definitley engaged, it was a great read, but I suppose not one of my all time favotire books. Some parts were slower than others!
I just had to let you know that I had lunch with a Chi Omega friend today and she was talking about The Help. Your mom would be proud to know that Kathryn Stockett is a Chi Omega! Just thought I'd pass that along:) I can't wait to read it!
