If you live in the north, I can assure you that you have never experienced the true heat of summer until you have lived one in the South. Humidity hangs heavy in the air, and slaps you in the face the minute you walk out the door. You literally feel as if you could cut the air with a huge butcher knife.
Humidity wreaks havoc on hair more than anything else. If you have curly hair, it goes limp and straight. If you wear your hair straight, it frizzes up and becomes curly (and not in a good-Gisele-Bundchen-beachy-waves kind of way, but in a bad-80s-perm kind of way).
Like most others, my hair is generally claimed victim by the intense summer humidity. If I smooth it out with a straightening iron, it frizzes and kinks up. Forget about wearing it curly, the curls fall flat within 10 seconds of walking outside. I give you Exhibit A...the top picture shows you what my hair looks like when I wear it curly (which is also how I styled it for a wedding in Hilton Head last October). The bottom picture depicts my hair at said wedding, after being exposed to humidity for about 10 minutes. Not a pretty sight, huh? I have two words for you...
HOT MESS.

I give you all that background so you can see why I chalked up styling my hair in the summer as a lost cause. Then I decided to try Moroccan Hair Oil, which seems to be featured EVERYWHERE right now. I figured I had tried everything else, so why the hell not try this stuff. I have to tell you, it is AMAZING - one use of this stuff and I was wondering where it had been all of my life. It makes your hair very soft and shiny, and smells incredible. The best part? Humidity doesn't appear to be an issue anymore! I wore this stuff every day while we were in Hilton Head last week, and my hair stayed smooth and in place, no frizz to be seen. If you have not tried this stuff - run, don't walk, to your computer and order some pronto. I found mine at a local salon, but if you go here, you can find where you can order it online or check to see if any of your local retailers carry it. Chalking this up to one more battle won in the war against humidity and its control on hair!

i spent a summer in Georgia---and could NOT believe the humidity! you could cut the air with a knife. my poor hair was destined to nothing but pony tails! i could have used this stuff! sounds like a great product!!
Thanks for the recommendation! Do you have thick hair? Mine is very fine... doesn't get frizzy so much as falls COMPLETELY flat. What do you think about this product on fine hair... good try or gulf coast oily mess?? =)
You're right, ma'am, this southern humidity will wreak havoc on the best hair day! I have heard fabulous reviews of this stuff, Hoda Kotb (from the Today Show) swears by it! I love your curly hair in that first picture! Have I mentioned how pretty you are?? :)
Happy weekending, honey! xoxo
Oh yes, all the little fly-aways are driving me nuts! I feel like my hair is all dry and frayed.
Some girl randomly told me about this oil about a month ago while I was looking at shampoo in Ulta. I haven't bought it yet but after your ringing endorsement, I might just have to give it a try.
We don't have humidity here in California (thank goodness!!!) but we do have "beach hair" which sounds similar to humidity hair! I will have to try that product!
P.S. GORGEOUS picture of you with your hair curly! So cute!
First of all, you look absolutely BEAUTIFUL in any hairstyle! You make me want to cut my hair...but oops...my round face may not agree! Hee, hee! Thanks for the hair tip! My thick hair really gets frizzy...HUGE! I will have to look for this!
i didnt know that it helps with the humidity attacking your hair! BTW, your hair looks GORG curly! I need to know what size barrel you use. Our hair is similar in length.
Hi there pretty lady! You look gorgeous in your curls and even in your humidity hair, but I feel your pain. I am super psyched to try your product suggestion, you might have just saved my hair from summer HOT MESS too! For that I would be forever indebted to you! :) xxoxox Hugs to you friend!
BTW - I went back through my old emails and I don't think I got anything from you - can you resend it?? I am SO SORRY! Perhaps it was a gmail glitch? xoxox
oh the humidity is so mean! my hair stylist just recently gave me something similar...can't think of the name but's a moroccan oil and it has totally saved me this summer! have you had an luck finding a good shampoo and conditioner?
Morocan Oil is the best ever! When we're back in the midwest, it's the only thing that can save my hair from the humidity! Out here where it's really dry it's too heavy for my hair, so I don't get to use it as often.
I so need to check that out. I have had a lot of ponytail days lately.
you are too cute!! i'm fortunate enough to have pretty frizz-resistant hair, but it definitely won't hold a curl in the tennessee summer air!
So thankful I stumbled across your blog this morning. After just finishing "trying" to style my hair (it's now in a ponytail), this post was an answered prayer! I'm along the Gulf Coast and humidity is torture! Thanks so much for sharing. I'm a new follower for sure!
ha ha...LOVE the way you described the southern inferno. :) After living in Charlotte, NC for four years, it was quite a change when we moved up to the Philadelphia area last fall.
Girl, your hair is gorgeous in both pictures! And I adore that black dress you are wearing at the wedding!
I never knew what real humidity was until I visited Texas...you poor girl! Your curls look fabulous--way to win the battle :) I wish I knew how to make my hair do that!
I have been using this too, amazing! Your hair looks great curly!
Hahaha... awww. I love the before and afters at Hilton Head!
Thanks so much for the recommendation, I can't wait to try it! My poor hair spends most of the Summer in a pony tail thanks to the horrible humidity. Maybe now it won't have to :)
This southern girl completely understands. Your hair is so cute curly:)
You commented about the Kindle on my blog. I love books and would never give them up but the Kindle would be great for travel and for my purse. I carry a book everywhere I go:) You have no reply on your blogger account and I have been emailing you every time you comment on my blog and now I find out that you haven't been receiving them:(
I CAN NOT live without this stuff!!
<3 Cara
That's it. I'm trying it. I've heard so much about it but I trust you and I'm trying it. My hair is super fine and when the midwest humidity gets to it (second only to southern humidity, I'm sure) it's impossible to get it to look decent. I hope it works!
The humidity just makes my hair go flat...it's awful!! But I LOOVE your curls!!! Precious!!!
I've heard so much about this stuff-- it's so nice to have a real review from you! I will definitely be trying it, my hair is a TOTAL hot mess on all vacations!!!
Oh girl, you are so right! I have lived in Florida/Georgia my entire life so I have no idea what it is like to have hair that doesn't frizz in the summer! I'm definitely going to try the Moroccan Oil; I tried a brand called Ion (a conditioning treatment) from Sally Hansen and it was a total waste of $4.99, I don't really think it helped! I'm definitely going to have to try this new craze!
Oh girl, I am so with you on this!! Humidity stinks! I have naturally curly hair, somedays I wonder why I even bother to straighten it when the humidity is so high! Thanks for the product recommendation! I love that picture of you and you friends! Love the dresses, I love your friends blue dress!!!!
You and your girlfriends are all drop dead gorgeous!!! Wowzas, hot mamas! Xo
Holy smokes...we're in NH and my hair NEVER looks that good (we don't have much humidity either). I'm your newest follower. Can't wait to read more about the Southern life. Is it really like Sweet Home Alabama?
Great stuff, I've used it before and it works. I need to replenish my supply.
OK - I am ordering now. This sounds WAY too good to be true! I'm not kidding when I say that I haven't worn my hair down in a month. Can't wait to try it!
first of all, i think your hair looks great curly! my salon carries this oil and they've mentioned it to me, but i figured they just probably want to sell products. i will check it out. off topic, but i love the one shoulder aqua dress your friend is wearing.....and you've got the dress on i emailed you about. i found one similar at ann taylor loft. the bottom part is light khaki/gold upper part is white. i still haven't worn it though. i feel too pale.
Hello there! I am going to run, not walk, to buy this stuff tomorrow!!! I live in Charleston. I am the frizz queen and my hairdresser just cut my bangs short!!! What the who ha was he thinking????? Thanks for the recommendation. Your blog is great! I started reading some. We have a lot in common. I want to be a photographer when I grow up and I live for my daughter and husband! I have started shooting more in manual and my shots look like some of yours from your trip! Gotta work the blur out! So nice to meet you! Come and by and visit me at my blog sometime!
Kathryn
You (and your daughter!) are too cute. I absolutely love your curly hair. I would chop mine off in a heartbeat if it would do that.
