Disturbia

Here's a little debate for you this Friday morning...the following clip is of a team of dancers, age 7, dancing in the World of Dance Competition in Pomona, California last month. I stumbled upon the video this morning, and while I think that these little girls (and I do emphasize little girls) are extremely talented, I find the moves and the costumes kind of disturbing. Am I alone here? I don't consider myself to be a prude, but these little girls look SO grown up and they are only SEVEN!

this was on Good Morning America this morning and while I agree that they are extremely talented, I wouldn't want my daughter doing the moves that they are doing! The outfits I don't think bother me but the thrusting and all that mess make me uncomfortable! Especially in a society like outs where everything seems to find its way to YouTube!

1. Talent? ABSOLUTELY!
2. Too provocative for 7 yr. olds? ABSOLUTELY!

I have a 7 year old. She plays baby dolls and sings High School Musical songs. She dances with us...twirling, no thrusting, grinding and bumping. I agree that this is WAY TOO YOUNG! Yikes!

Now, Beyonce definitely would get a "kick" outta this. Goodness, I would hurt something if I tried those moves! Ha! :)

There's no doubt they're good but seriously, they're SEVEN! A little too many gyrations.

Before I watched it, I was going to comment and ask if it was too much that Colin said he was "bringing sexy back" last night?

They are VERY good dancers for age 7!!! Wow!!!

#1 They shouldn't be wearing costumes like that as young as they are!!!!!!!
#2 They shouldn't be taught those kind of moves as young as they are!

That is just so sad to see and I'm surprised their parents allowed it.

Yikes..I have to disagree with most of you. I did see this on GMA this morning. My daughter now 20 - danced for 16 years. I have been too many dance competitions and and this is what you see. I guess I am use to it? I really thought nothing of it.

I was watching this when eldest walked in and she had enough sense to know it was inappropriate, but where are the other parents to teach their children this fact?

I love the song, I'm thrilled that they've been blessed with such blossoming talent. But there was a line crossed here that makes me wonder why this was even allowed by such young children.

I'm going to hug my children a little tighter today.

I only have younger boys but here's my thoughts...those girls are extremely talented BUT WOW...I think both the dance moves and the outfits are way too provocative. Had the dance moves been different then maybe the outfits would have been okay but when coupled with the dance moves it is way too much. What will they be doing and wearing when they are 10?

Yeah, I don't think seven-year-olds need to be dancing to someone singing about putting a ring on it. They're seven, not twenty-seven. Lawsy mercy.

Well, I think it's the outfits that bother me most. There are a few moves in there that are totally inappropriate, but if they had little girl normal tutus on and cut out those hip thrusting moves, it wouldn't bother me. I really don't like my girls to wear swim suits that look like bikinis, but that's just me. And this year they have 2 pieces, so I guess I'm getting less prudish!

Being the momma of a dancer for the past 5 years there is no way I would let Macy set foot on stage in a costume like that. Such great talented little girls, little ballerinas are way more cute at that age. Hope you have a great weekend! xoxo

I saw this yesterday.....Yes those girls are talented, but YIKES. Can I say that again? YIKES.
The fact that they are 7, wearing outfits like that & dancing like that is just not right.

I saw this on the news last night and my jaw dropped. I think it's very inappropriate. I do think they are very talented, however I think they could probably do that same performance but eliminate some of the more provocative moves and have better costumes. Even Beyonce was more covered up in her video!

I am with you! they grow up too fast as it is, there is no reason to have these kinds of outfits for such little girls--or some of these moves-yipes!

This is ridiculous. No matter how talented, is this really necessary? I'm with you, way too disturbing for my taste. Can you imagine asking your grandmother to come see your daughter dance to a song like this, dressed like this, at this age? So embarrassing and extremely inappropriate.

oh my girl that was crazy! They are mad talented but way to provocative!! Holy smokes. My boss walked by as I watching that and from faraway he said look at those hotties!! eek... That was before I told him they were seven...

All I know is that Addison and Alexandra will NEVER be in a dance routine like that!!! What a shocker! Even the costumes too much to handle! I know Scott would absolutely flip out if Addi ever had to wear something like that! I saw this on the news this morning too and about died!!

I think they are way too young too provacative. They are very talented, but that is no excuse!! Kids grow up so fast these days!!

Wow! You know, they were really, really good but no, I don't think 7-year-olds should be dancing like that - ever! I'm not a prude at all but yeah, this dance is wayyy over the top.

p.s. I'm a new reader of your blog, love it!

my grandmother would have said "that's the kind of dancing that gets you pregnant"....I actually thought the video was a little heartbreaking, not to sound too dramatic, but if these girls are performing like this then that means there is a team of adults condoning/choreagraphing/encouraging it...even scarier!

You definitely are not wrong to be disturbed. That costume alone is wrong! They are too young ot be taught the ideals that type of dancing displays.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I was more shocked by the outfits than the dance moves. Too tight, too short and too much make up for little girls. Not that they look like little girls in that video!

The dance moves didn't bother me as much. I might be naive, but I doubt the girls recognize the sexual nature of the dance moves - they're just dancing. I dont' have kids so I could be way off base there...Still, pretty advanced stuff.

Hopefully their "costumer" will use a bit more sense in choosing their outfits next time. I also hope the kids aren't being clued in on all the negative attention they're receiving for this dance. That can't be good for them either.

This seems to be a big controversy and with good reason I think. I danced all my life and coached our high school dance team for a few years. I LOVE dance and I hope my little one will dance one day but that is ridiculous! I would hope my 7 year old would be in a sweet outfit doing sweet moves. She most certainly won't be bumping and grinding! I hadn't seen this yet. Thanks for posting about it!

Well shoot! I can't see the video. But I do have to say I have strong feelings about how I want to raise my children to be Godly people weather or not it is popular. And provocative dance moves and tiny outfits don't sound appealing to me. =) Just my 2 cents.

Seriously troubling :( The dance moves seem even more disturbing than the outfits--trying to have young girl "exude" sexuality is scary, scary, scary! And awkward.

Thanks for the toy kitchen tip, btw! So many cute ones out there--and surprisingly reasonably priced!

Sara, I hope you are not alone here! As a Mom to three, two that are girls ages 10 and 8, I find stuff like this very disturbing! Just like a lot of songs on top 40 radio...Keisha might be adorable and fun, but I really don't think its appropriate for elementary school age children to be singing along to this stuff as well. We all need to try harder as a society to bring childhood back! :)

Oh crap, the video won't play! But I don't have to see it to tell you that I definitely have a problem with young girls mimicking provocative moves, I really think it contributes to all of these crazy eating disorders and body images issues, let kids be kids!

Heather said...

Well I couldn't see the video, but I have a feeling I know what you are talking about. It seems like these days there is all kinds of pressure to grow up fast, from clothing to sports competitions, everything. It's insane.

Unknown said...

Totally and completely inappropriate! My fear is that those little girls are being pushed to look older and more provocative than they are because that's what gets attention in this messed up world. Can their parents PLEASE just let them be 7 years old?!

Wow, they removed the video! Obviously you are not alone in finding the video inappropriate! Thank goodness it's no long on youtube.

I left you an award on my bog! I hope you have a fantastic week!!!

The video didn't come up for me but I will say that the older I get (42) things like that bother me. I see girls out at school or in the mall and I would not let them go off dressed like some of them do. It is just not lady like.

i cannot begin to express how wrong i thing this is... shame on the mothers of these kids!

What happened to being a little kid? I find the video disturbing...it makes me sick. Really, parents found that entertaining to watch?
