Glutton for Punishment

I would do practically anything for my daughter - walk across fiery hot coals, swim through shark-infested waters, dart across a traffic-filled freeway....

...but I think I'm about to draw the line at baked goods.

My beautiful girl is turning 2, two weeks from this Tuesday (try saying that 10 times fast, it's a tongue twister!). I'm sure there will be a tear-soaked post in a couple of weeks talking about how much time flies, how she is no longer a baby, etcetera, etcetera (you can hardly wait, I'm sure!). We will be having a small party for family and a few friends the Saturday following her birthday, and if you have ever read my blog you know it must be Sesame Street themed as we are OBSESSED with the furry red guy in our household.

I've been starting the preparations and I think I have decided upon everything ... well, except for one little thing that keeps haunting me - CAKE POPS. Are you familiar with the legendary Bakerella? If not, you really should check out her site - her baked confections will have you drooling on your keyboard and the photos are beautiful. Bakerella is known for her cake pops - she even taught Martha (yes, THAT Martha) how to make cupcake pops on her TV show. Seriously, how cute are these??

I stumbled upon the link last year while planning Alexandra's first birthday party, and was determined to make them.

And make them I did - with a little blood, sweat, tears and a LOT of swearing. Bakerella swears they are not difficult but I would beg to differ - probably because I do not have any inherent baking skills. Here's my version - needless to say, they were not nearly as pleasing to the eye as Bakerella's.

While they weren't very attractive, they did taste pretty great, if I do say so myself. They were the hit of the day, with everyone passing up the cupcakes from the local bakery in favor of the pops - at the end of the day, I didn't have a single one left. I told all of our family members to enjoy the cake pops because I would NOT be making them again. And I held true to my conviction...that is, until I saw these:

Oh my word...how stinking adorable are those?! All of a sudden, I began having thoughts that went something like this (imagine a little angel on one shoulder and a little devil on the other, because that's how the conversation seemed to go):

"How cute would those be for Alexandra's birthday party?"

"What on EARTH are you thinking? Don't you remember how much time those took last year and all the effort that went into them? You are a full-time working mom, for crying out loud - who has the time?"

"Well, that was also because I made her cake, which I'm not doing this year...so maybe it wouldn't be quite as much effort..."

"HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND, WOMAN?!?!"

As you can see, I'm totally on the fence. We'll see if I end up caving and making these or not...ahh, the things we do for our children!

Bakerella is AMAZING. I love her. Wish we were friends. So I think you should totally make these, the ones you made before are amazing! You can do it :)

Ok first your cake pops from last year were definitely AMAZING!! And I thought they looked great, keep in mind the first photo from Bakerella was probably photo shopped.
I also know that the sesame street characters are oh so adoroble. I love to bake but if it was me I would be going to either one of my very talented friends or my favorite cake place (here in Charlotte my favorite place is Edible Art) and commissioning them to do the dirty work/fun for me =) Happy Baking!!

See if Tara will make them for you. She is awesome and I think would love the extra baking business. She did the girls cakes for their Birthday party and Kevin delivered them b/c he was coming down anyway to see his mom.

I completely get it, or did anyway. You just want everything to be perfect. However, I have to say that I broke down and ordered cupcakes from Sam's this past weekend for my daughter's 4th b-day party, put them on a fancy cake plate, and it was a done deal :)

Don't beat yourself up about trying to make it all perfect yourself. Hire out what work you can:) We have a cookie monster cupcake cake for Sterling's 1st Birthday. It was store bought, yummy, and there was no cutting the cake. It was great. Just be ready for the bright stains it may leave behind when the little ones dive in!

Oh, I love Bakerella! When she originally posted those sesame street cake pops I was in love, but they sure look tough!
Everytime I'm on her website I get the urge to bake, but I just can't ever pull it off!

Oh if I were there, I'd totally come help you! These are so cute. But the truth of the matter is, she won't know (or care) if you make cake pops or open up Little Debbie snacks. She'll just be excited to have her friends and family there with her!

Your conversation with the angel and the devil totally sounded like a conversation Wes and I would have (where he'd play the devil and I'd try to rationalize biting off more than I can chew!).

Whatever you decide will be super cute. I'm sure of it!

Those Sesame Street cake pops are too cute not to make!!! You just have to do it, or better yet, have someone else make them!!

Too cute! New to Bakerella..will check this out. Your pops were adorable...hoping you actually make angel and devil ones b/c that would be hysterical! Good luck whatever you decide to do!

WOW!!! I am so impressed with your cupcake cake pops, they came out great! I tried to make them and well, mine ended up into picking up cupcakes last minute from Georgetown Cupcake. I am not very talented at all when it comes to baking, period.

Can't believe that beautiful baby girl is almost 2! You are such a great mom. I can't wait to see how your Sesame Street pops turn out if you decide to go for it! I think you would do an amazing job. That Bakerella, she's something else, right? :)

Have a great day Sara!

HOW CUTE ARE THOSE!!! I am still working on a bday "theme" for C. He would adore those pops. I say make them or find someone to. They are cute and I would hate for you to spend the whole party longing for those cute things! ha!
(I am not a baker...never heard of Bakerella, however I will be googling her tonight!)
Cute post.

totally feel your pain, I had a mild cardiac episode at my son's preschool party when the kiddos tore up my easter basket cupcakes...i think that you want to do it is more than enough, because I blew off a pedicure to make those stupid cupcakes, I should have put some funfetti in a muffin tin and quit while I was ahead(still haven't gotten the pedicure) Happy early birthday to your sweet sweet girl!

I love Bakerella!! You did a great job on them last year--go for it!
I am going crazy planning Cillian's 2nd birthday in June. I swear I am a certified party planning nut!

You most certainly can do it! I think you will do a fabulous job. The cake pops you made last year looked great and I am sure they tasted just as good. Now, go out there and make the best Sesame Street cake pops you have ever made!

Those cakes pops are pretty amazing, even the ones you made, but honestly, you would kill yourself trying to make the Sesame Street ones. Look at all the detail. I know I could just see my daughter looking at my attempt at making an Elmo, and she would look so puzzled, and wonder what it was. Haha! If you make them, I cannot wait to see the finished product. And as for Charbelle's comment, I have no idea who she is, but she mentioned her favorite place is Edible Art. That's who made my wedding cake, and I LOVE them!

Good luck! Happy Baking! :)

I say do it! They look too cute to pass up and she will be onto princess attire next year and not Sesame Street! I think you'll pull it off!

I did these for my house blessing. Bought a house cookie cutter, dipped the house in white, roof in chocolate, drew on a door and a wreath...Then after picking up the chunks of hair I pulled out while making them I displayed them on a painted green Styrofoam platter. They were gone quicker than you could imagine. I would attempt it again, even with a 3 month old. However I would spread the process over several days. Thankfully they do keep well so I would recommend pacing yourself. Wish you luck they sure are cute!

I love bakerella and this theme! Her party will be so amazing! There is so much work to be put into a party, but it is always a blast planning and decorating for one!

Cake pops? Have I died and gone to HEaven?

WOW! Her creations are incredible! Hope you find a workable option that's not as painful as hot coals!

I love Bakerella. She lives near where I use to in Georgia.

Anyway, those cake pops you did last year look great! I tried to make them but they didn't work out. We just ate them by picking them up. They were delish but not pretty and NOT on a stick:)
