Fashionable Do or Don't?

In just a few short weeks, I will be at Churchill Downs FOUR days in a row (yes, that's right - FOUR) for Derby week. On Wednesday, I'm headed out to the track with the ladies from the firm....Thursday we will be there with some dear friends in the corporate tent...Friday we will be attending Oaks...and then the big Derby dance on Saturday (we are delighted for our very good friends will be having a horse - Mission Impazible - run in this year's Derby, as I posted about here). Our week at the track will definitely be a marathon, not a sprint! I am going to try not to post too much about Derby fashion in the coming weeks, but I'm sure it will creep its way into some of my blog posting as it will be no small feat to assemble four fun outfits - so I apologize in advance!

In my own personal opinion, a great hat really ties together any Derby outfit. (See previous posts here and here). While I love a fabulous hat, I don't know if I will want to wear a hat four days in a row, and Derby hats can also be very pricey. With that in mind, I've been considering getting a fascinator to wear one day.

Have you heard of a fascinator before? I had seen them but didn't know what they were called until recently. Here are some beautiful examples...

What do you think? Is this a fashionable hit, or a total miss, much like the headpiece SJP/Carrie Bradshaw wore in the SATC movie - what on Earth was that?? DISASTER.

Speaking of Derby hats, even the little one is getting in on the act! Just for fun, we put one of my sister's old Derby hats on Alexandra on Easter Sunday - and she loved it!

You southern ladies have all the fun - cute accents, fancy hats, horse racing {as opposed to us from the Pacific Northwest and our mountaineering gear and fishing}. I sometimes wish I were from the south ... so I'll just live vicariously through you. Please post as many photos as you'd like about Derby fashion!

I also would love to see all of your Derby fashion! I have been in one of the boxes during Derby Week but that is all. I absolutely would L-O-V-E to go to the Derby and am planning on going very soon :)

No apologies necessary for posting about Derby clothes! I'm excited to live vicariously through you & your Derby adventure.

I love the idea of wearing a fascinator! You'd look great wearing one. I say go for it!

And how precious is Alexandra in that hat? Love those pictures.

Back again...

Do you have any websites you can recommend for Derby hats that won't break the bank? I've seen some gorgeous hats but it's hard to justify spending $250 when you're hundreds of miles away from the real Derby! Thanks!

Four days?! You go girl! Personally, I would reserve the hats for Oaks and Derby. Maybe a fascinator on your second day out there? Have fun!

Sounds like a ton of fun, I've always wanted to go! My sister is a chef at the Seelbach in Louisville, and she keeps talking about how busy they'll be next week. Have a blast!!

Oh how I love Derby hats. Fascinators? I don't know. I think it could be fab depending on the size. I'm totally jealous!

How fun! I know I couldn't pull off that look, I would probably go with a hat. Can't wait to see your pics!

Kee the fascinator as simple as possible, Don't even attempt if you have fine hair, waste of money won't stay in. Wear in dirty hair for sure. The simpler the lighter, we did this at Mardi Gras, and the more adornments the worse they hurt. I would wear a derby hat everyday of my life, if it was appropriate.
I like the peacock feather one, and make sure to smoosh the little cap thing a bit for better suction, if that makes any sense.

Oh, I forgot to say........
For the love of god, screw you other readers and bring on the derby fashion, they can wait a week!

Just kidding, but please we really don't mind at all, it may be why we are here!

Isn't that a weird name? Etsy.com has lots of FABULOUS fascinators available. I say do it...google Kate Middleton, she wears them to weddings a lot.

I am so excited that you are going 4 days in a row! I say that the first picture is good but the others? Not so much. LOL!

Killing me with those pics of your little sweet girl! The fascinator! I adore this idea, so British chic via Kate Middleton! You MUST do this at least one of the four days! And, please do a derby hat post or two, and drink a mint julep for me...or five! So jealous!

Alexandra looks so cute in that hat! I don't feel qualified to give any hat/fascinator input—as a California girl I know nothing of these fun Southern things! Good luck, though!

I can't help but love a BIG, traditional hat. But I think you could work a "fascinator" in there. (I love that name...haha) It would definitely be different. I think the hardest part would to not cross that disaster line...a good one would be very fun and very new/fresh. Baby Girl in that big hat...she's a natural! ;o)

hehe well I love the first picture obviously. I am a tad biased though wouldn't you say? Maybe you could do a fascinator one day and a hat the other?? The fascinators come in many many diff sizes and shapes, I am sure you could find something adorable!! :) anddd I may go to the derby this year too. We could MEET!! xx

FASHION DO FOR SURE! I love the look and it will be so much fun to dress up Derby style for 4 days!! Pics please!

Oh I love your fun style! I think if you're gonna go to the Derby, go all out! The Derby may be one of the few places (outside of a hollywood runway) where a Fascinator would be appropriate so I say go for it! Can't wait to see all the outfits you choose! Exciting about your friend's horse!!!! ~Bri~

okay, this post made me so excited to go to the Derby one day! (have I told you that my husband's family is really into horse races & we are all going to go to the derby in the next few years?) You are going to have to blog about every detail so that I know what to expect & so I know the places/events we should go!
Alexandra looked so cute in that hat! And, I totally think you should pull off the fasinator one of the days. Can't wait to see all your pictures!

Wow! You are so amazingly lucky! Hope you have a blast, I have wanted to go there for so long! I like the look of a fascinator as long as it isn't "too much!" It would be a nice alternative to buying pricey hats! Oh, I can't wait to see more Derby Fashion posts! I'm glad to have found your blog, can't wait to explore it some more!
